Artists Statement

I work in a huge, light-filled room at home in Dublin which is  half-kitchen and half-studio.  A couple of years ago, I thought it would be a good discipline to move my practice to an external studio. Bad Idea. My best work happens amidst the domestic jumble and even if someone occasionally complains about the butter tasting of turps, it makes, for me, the perfect Work-Life balance.

The impulse  towards the sensual physicality of putting  paint on canvas is sparked off, quite simply by Seeing. The light behind  the Connemara clouds, the gentle curve of a human foot, or the sight of a cherry tree in full bloom on a Saturday morning – such are the things that spark the connection between eye and hand that for me is at the beginning of every painting.
